Exciting Opportunity For Youth To Learn Lead

Exciting Opportunity for Youth to Learn & Lead

The New England University (UNE) is hosting a YOUth LEADing Australia Congress, one of more than a dozen linked events taking place across Australia.

“Congress provides an exciting action learning opportunity for students and youth to make an impact on sustainability,” said Dr Susen Smith, UNE Gifted & Talented Education specialist. “Plus, by using digital media, local participants will be connected with other young people and sustainability initiatives right around Australia.”

YOUth LEADing Australia is being held at the UNE from 23 to 25 November 2010 and aims to bring together 100 young people from across the New England and Northern Inland Region.

The initiative was launched by OzGreen in 2009 when the New England was one of seven locations around Australia to participate. A growing network of youth is now building with the voice, vision, skills and initiatives for sustainability, one of the biggest challenges of our times.

“The UNE's support and partnership has provided the keystone for making the 2010 Youth Congress possible,” said Adam Blakester, New England Sustainability Strategy (NESS) Convenor. “Their state of the art facilities are the perfect setting, with digital media technology to link us with other Congress sites, plus a body of world class educators and initiatives focussed on enhancing sustainability.”

The Congress uses OzGREEN’s inspiring youth sustainability-in-action process that focuses on three ways to make a difference: personal responsibility to live sustainably; creating community change; and connecting change makers. Participants will navigate both challenges ~ such as climate change, food security, energy and water ~ as well as solutions ~ working with local sustainability champions to share success stories and build a shared base for action and inspiration.

Expressions of Interest are now sought from young people interested in participating in the New England YOUth LEADing Australia Congress. Partners are also being sought to join with the UNE, NESS and OzGreen to invest in the next generation of leadership for sustainability.

Congresses are confirmed for six other regions ~ Alice Springs, Cairns-Cape York, Hunter, NSW Mid North Coast, Southern Highlands and the Murray ~ plus seven metropolitan cities ~ Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
